New Product Express | Halo Microelectronics Launches USB Type-C Interface Protection Chip for Laptops

In September 2022, Halo Microelectronics Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Halo Microelectronics"), a leading domestic analog chip manufacturer, announced the launch of the new USB interface protection chip HL8261 — a 4-channel USB Type-C interface protection device that is a must-have product for all computers, docking stations, and adapters.

 

In device applications, the Sideband Use (SBU) auxiliary signal channels of Type-C connectors can transmit high-speed data. However, if traditional methods are used to add external capacitors to the protection pins on the connector to protect the SBU pins, the data transmission bandwidth will be limited, thereby restricting high-speed data transmission. This makes it more challenging to protect SBU pins from electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. Additionally, the VBUS pin of the Type-C interface operates at a high voltage, and the CC pins and SBU pins are adjacent to the VBUS pin, making them vulnerable to damage from voltage surges.

 

The new USB Type-C interface protection chip HL8261 launched by Halo Microelectronics can provide Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) and ESD protection for CC pins and SBU pins. When the chip detects an over-voltage condition on these pins, it will cut off the power paths of these 4 pins to protect the downstream system from damage. Each of the 4 input pins of HL8261 has a maximum rated voltage of 24V DC, which can safely and reliably provide over-voltage protection (up to 20V) for CC and SBU pins in case of a short circuit with VBUS.

 

HL8261 is designed to comply with RoHS specifications and green environmental protection standards, and adopts a 16-bump WLCSP package. It is an ideal USB Type-C interface protection device for laptops, Chromebooks, docking stations (port replicators), port software protectors (dongles), and adapters.

 

The CEO of Halo Microelectronics said: "Compared with competing products, HL8261 has the advantage of an ultra-fast OVP protection response time (only 30ns), while the best competing products require an OVP protection response time of 70ns. OVP protection response time refers to the time it takes to turn off the power path to protect the device when an over-voltage condition occurs on the pin. Therefore, OVP protection response time is a key performance indicator for selecting load switch chips."
