January 30, 2024
With the arrival of 2024, the promotion of USB Type-C as the universal interface standard for electronic devices in the European Union has been accelerated, making USB Type-C an essential interface for electronic device connections. In today's era of rapid technological development, users' demands for USB Type-C interfaces are no longer limited to simple charging and data transmission, but pursue more efficient and safer user experiences. To meet this demand, Halo Microelectronics announces the launch of HL5281, a USB Type-C analog audio switch product integrated with Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) and watchdog timer protection functions. This product not only has efficient data transmission capability, but also incorporates over-voltage protection technology to safeguard every safe connection.
Product Features HL5281 is a high-performance USB Type-C port multimedia switch that supports analog audio headsets. It allows sharing a universal USB Type-C port to transmit USB2.0 signals, analog audio, sideband use signals, and analog microphone signals. HL5281 also supports high voltage on both the SBU side port and the USB Type-C adapter side port. In addition, HL5281 can act as a slave device, supporting data transmission modes specified in the I2C bus specification, including 100kbps standard mode and 400kbps fast mode.
HL5281 is equipped with an Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) function on the pins of the adapter side. If the input voltage (Vin) exceeds the OVP threshold, the internal initial signal routing path will be turned off. Whenever a pin triggers an Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) event, the Flag register will provide corresponding pin information. HL5281 is also equipped with a watchdog timer. This timer continuously monitors I2C communication; once enabled, the timer will start and can be reset successfully through I2C communication (reading from or writing to the master device). If no I2C communication is detected after the timer count is cleared, HL5281 will trigger an interrupt event and reset the switch to reconfigure the registers (restoring REG04 and REG05 to default values). If the watchdog timer needs to be configured, users can program it through the REG20 register.
HL5281 adopts WLCSP packaging, making it an ideal choice for USB interface switching and protection in devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and media players.
Product Advantages
HL5281 integrates three-in-one switching and transmission functions, making system-level design more flexible. Through a single USB Type-C interface, it can quickly transmit USB2.0, analog audio, sideband use signals, and analog microphone signals, eliminating the 3.5mm headphone jack. This design not only improves data transmission efficiency and flexibility, but also incorporates over-voltage protection technology to ensure stable and secure connections. The phone interface becomes more concise with excellent waterproof and dustproof performance. The overall solution is more compact, simplifying design implementation and reducing system area.
HL5281 integrates an I2C interface, which can be easily controlled by the host processor, thereby significantly reducing audio popping and clicking sounds caused by setting changes. At the same time, it has a built-in OMTP/CTIA detection function and is equipped with a dedicated ground detection switch, further enhancing the anti-crosstalk performance of the terminal system and bringing users a purer and more stable audio experience.
The integrated Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) function of HL5281 can prevent circuit damage caused by over-voltage, ensuring stable operation of the device. The equipped watchdog timer can monitor the system operation status; once a fault or deadlock is detected, it will automatically restart the system, greatly improving system reliability and ensuring stable operation.
HL5281 has two different I/O voltage logics, enabling efficient communication with various devices and achieving good compatibility. Therefore, it can adapt to different circuits, systems, or processors and ensure stable and reliable data transmission.
Application Prospects The person in charge of Halo Microelectronics' Consumer Electronics Business Division said: "HL5281 is an upgraded version of the extremely successful interface protection product HL5280. It integrates a switching function that usually requires discrete components to implement, thereby reducing the total cost of the solution and the PCB area."
